Yes, I practice what I preach! After our last episode I made some big changes in the business that are just what I told you to do. Come hear what happened!

Matt Henderson (00:06):
Hey everyone, Matt from The Business Mind Podcast. Thank you for coming back. It’s great to be back here with you again because the last time was actually a couple weeks ago because I’ve been crazed and busy trying to figure out how to do things in my business so that I can come back and share them with you and explain to you exactly what I’ve done and how it’s worked out and how it’s going in my business, right? Because it’s not about me preaching about how cool my business is, I don’t think anybody cares about how cool my business is or is not. It’s more about me coming here to tell you what’s working for me and what’s not working so that you guys can save yourselves the time and gain a little bit of an edge on your competitors, right?

Matt Henderson (00:54):
If you don’t know about me, obviously my name’s Matt Henderson from The Business Mind Podcast and I try to get here every week and I’ve been doing terribly at that, but I did just realize that we’ve done a ton of episodes and we just passed two years old.

Matt Henderson (01:12):
Welcome and if you haven’t been here before, but thank you if you’re a long time follower, because this has been really cool. I wanted to come back to last week’s conversation and tell you what I’ve done to implement what I was talking about. If you didn’t get a chance to listen to last week’s episode, go back, listen to last week’s episode, it was pretty sweet and it was all about what’s holding you back and not just in business, but in life and with family and everything, what’s holding you back. And the reason I brought it up was because in my business life, I had some things that were holding me back and I didn’t necessarily realize that they were holding me back. But once I started to audit more of what I was spending my time on in business, I realized that they were holding me back.

Matt Henderson (02:02):
I thought I better make an episode about this. I’ll bet I’m not the only one having this problem. If you didn’t listen, like I said, go back and listen to the last episode. But we talked about business and life. Honestly, you do everything you can yourself. A lot of us are a solopreneur. That’s who I am, right? I became a solopreneur because the businesses I have weren’t making enough money and I have business partners and I thought, oh my gosh, I got to figure out something so I can provide for my wife and for us to live and be a supportive husband because she was doing her part and I wanted to do my part. And it was time. I was tired of being the person who wasn’t… I wasn’t producing enough, that’s that.

Matt Henderson (02:50):
And that’s difficult to say and very difficult to hear, but that’s just what it is. I wasn’t producing at a level I had to. I went and I became a solopreneur. Now my whole life I’ve been working in entrepreneurial business and I have been a business owner in some aspect through my whole life, but always with business partners. And this was my first time going out on my own and I didn’t know what to do, but something hit me where I said, you know what? That’s always been the problem, I didn’t know what to do. I chose something and I just went with it and I moved forward and I tried that business and guess what I failed and that hadn’t been my first failure in business, but it’d been one of many failures in business to be honest.

Matt Henderson (03:35):
But what I did learn from that business, I was able to apply to another I already had so it worked out great. Was it difficult? Was it hard? Yep. Did I lose some money on it? Absolutely. And did I recover? Yes. If those are things that are on your mind and you’re wondering, what do I do? There you go. It’s going to happen that you fail. It’s going to happen that it is going to sting. You’re probably going to lose a bit of money. Maybe a little bit of face with your friends or family, but you know what everybody gets over it and you move on and the money, it all comes back. Because what you’ve learned in the failure will apply to something in the future so don’t stress it. But we talked about as a solopreneur or hey, if you’re a solo parent, whatever it is, whatever your focus is.

Matt Henderson (04:25):
And you’re listening here, you’re obviously trying to start your own business or grow your own business, right? It’s called The Business Mind Podcast, I’m thinking that you were probably looking for tips and tricks and how to apply them to your business. And this is what I’m telling you, max yourself out, right? We talked about this last week, max yourself out, but then delegate and have a list of the things that you know how to do very well. You know what you could hand off to somebody else and then teach them how to do it. Maybe they already know how to do it and they just need a little more direction from you and you can just add that in, but delegate it, right? We spoke about that last week and I didn’t want people to think I just believe in hiring people and throwing away money and they’ll figure it out or you’ll figure it out in business.

Matt Henderson (05:14):
No, it’s a quick way to fail. I believe in learning as much as you can yourself, but don’t overdo it. Know what you’re good at and then pass it along. If you’re great at writing stuff, be great, do the writing. But once you hit a certain level, you’re going to have to pass that off to somebody else. Long story short, that’s what we were talking about last week. The last time we were on and it was actually a couple weeks and I wanted to let you know that I’ve done that myself and I put it to test for you. What I’ve done is I’ve actually hired two VAs or virtual assistants and I’ve actually got them now working in my business with me. For those that don’t know, I’m only four or so years into business and the first business failed about 18 months in.

Matt Henderson (06:07):
And I started my current business probably about 9, 10 months after that. I’m two years or so into my current digital marketing business and I’ve outgrown what I’m able to currently do myself. I’ve reached out and I’ve figured out getting virtual assistance for my business. Now, people would’ve thought, what did you pass along? What were you able to let somebody else handle in your business that easy or it was easy enough for you to hand off? And the answer is nothing. Nothing’s easy for me at handoff. I’m one of the people that likes to, I like to have my hands on everything. I like to see what’s happening. And I like to be part of what’s happening. But if you truly want to move ahead, you have to get trusted people. I had to look for those that could help me.

Matt Henderson (07:02):
I looked for the who’s. The people who are better at things than I am, not the how. I immediately tried to dive into how to be better at it and I just thought I don’t have to. What I looked for was somebody who could do things that I already knew how to do, in my case content writing and some design things for websites and I started speaking with them and I wound up hiring two people. Now they’re both part-time, but it equals up to over a full-time person. And I’m working with two people to grow my business. And for the first time, this weekend in years today, I finally hit a point where I said, I don’t know what else to do. Now I’m moving, I’m mapping forward. I’m not working today, I’m not working in my business today.

Matt Henderson (08:00):
Do you understand what I’m saying? I’ve put somebody else in charge of those things. It’s actually their job to work on it today. And they start in, well, based on what time it is now in three hours and they start and it’s their Monday morning. And I’ve been able to hand those things off that were things that I can easily check on and I can manage with people and that I can make videos and show them how to do if necessary. But I hired skilled employees that were able to do the work. I’m delegating out so that I could free up more time for myself. Now the issue becomes how do I work on my business and not in it? I wanted to share that evolution with you because I know I spoke about delegating and everything on our last call.

Matt Henderson (08:48):
And I thought maybe, our last call, our last podcast here. And I didn’t want people to think that I just hand things off, just get people to do it. Don’t worry about it, always look for the who and don’t worry about the money. I worry about the money too. I worry about it but I do believe that finding the who is the correct way, not necessarily learning the how. And once you can organize yourself in order to delegate, meaning you can put your ducks in a row so that you can easily teach somebody else how to do what you do then the job can become a lot easier. And I just saw in a week or so’s worth of work with them, what the future, what it could actually look like now. It’s different.

Matt Henderson (09:43):
And I don’t know if that’s going to sink in for everybody right away, but it’s different. I finally, for the first time, looked at my business from the outside and it just left me speechless thinking, holy cow, I need to tell somebody about this. I need to tell my people about this and you’re my people so I came to tell you, I just wanted to let you know what’s going on, but that’s what’s going on. I do practice what I preach like I say. I do believe that you can hire people to do work at some level for your business and it’ll help you get by. Maybe it’s customer support for you, maybe it’s just research you need done, maybe it’s just, I don’t know, everybody’s got their thing, right?

Matt Henderson (10:34):
But just think about it. It’s something that currently is going to free up my time and my life and allow me to actually move forward with business without having to worry about day to day operations, which has been my concern for a long time now. Pretty cool how I went from being the guy who was annoyed back in the day that I couldn’t move forward. And what was I going to do? And how much was this going to cost? And a million reasons why my business wouldn’t work, all to the point of where I’m at today, which is, hey, I can afford to pay some people to come in and help me now. Let me start looking for the right people. If you haven’t gone back and listened to all the episodes, first of all, let me apologize.

Matt Henderson (11:18):
The beginning episodes are a little difficult because I was getting into recording stuff and I’m not great at it yet, but I’m working on it. I’m two years in, I’m working on it. But the beginning ones are a little difficult, but the stories and the lessons that you can take out of them are amazing. I urge you to go back, listen.
